A Quiet Farewell, A Lasting Legacy
In the final months of his life, Tan Piah Eng faced
throat cancer with quiet strength. In November 1954, just three months
before his passing, he moved into his seaside home at 614‑3 Bedok Road —
later re‑addressed to 10J in 1964.
He had chosen the house deliberately, preferring the sea breeze of Bedok
over a brick home inland at Siglap Opera Estate.
During his illness, he was visited by a friend and, in those reflective days, was baptised as a Roman Catholic, receiving the name Peter.
On 27 February 1955, at 76, he passed away peacefully at his Bedok home. His obituary announced a quiet farewell for a man whose life had shaped a community.

Forty‑seven years later, on 22 July 2002, his remains were exhumed by the government of Singapore and his ashes interred at Choa Chu Kang Columbarium, where he rests today — Block A (Level 01), Room 8, Niche 92.
Legacy
Tan Piah Eng’s life endures through the many roles he
embodied:
- a

Quartermaster Sergeant
- a
long‑service medal recipient
- a
Chinese Manager
- an
Acting Manager
- a
full Manager
- a
wartime coordinator
- a

His story mirrors the evolution of Singapore itself — from

preserved.
Preservation
In August 2024, the National Library Board
accepted a donation of fifteen of Tan Piah Eng’s photographs, notes, documents,
and printed materials - items kept by his son Tan Kim Suan (from his wife
Mdm Chan Ah Siew). After Kim Suan’s passing in June 2023, his
sons - Tan Eng Soon Dennis and Tan Eng Swee Jimmy - made the
decision to donate these treasured materials.
On 24 October 2025, several of these items were exhibited at the National Library Board’s Donors Appreciation Night, attended by Dennis. The evening was graced by Minister for Digital Development and Information, Mrs Josephine Teo.
